Hi:

Is there scanner available for students to use in CDF?

Does the CSSU provide students with a computer which has a scanner?

I know students can use a scanner at Robarts, but their hours are 9 to
5.

Having at least one computer with a scanner availble in CDF
would benefit students taking certain courses like web programming.

Thanks
John

A scanner is a good idea for student use (and it will be duely noted).
However the CSSU right now is looking into obtaining a photo-copy machine
and possibly a Windows computer + printer. Due to a tight budget we are
still trying to find the best possible deal (or possible donation). I
definately will take note of having a scanner and bring it up at the next
meeting.

Thanks for the input

Out of curiosity, what is the rational for a Windows Computer/Printer?
(Especially the printer since you could probably figure a way to share the
CDF printers to a windows machine with Samba.) About the only thing that
I can think of using something like that for is printing PowerPoint slides
and that can be done with Open Office in the event that the prof isn't
able to figure how to provide postscript and/or PDF versions. But there
may be other reasons?

A scanner is certainly a good idea though. Perhaps look into one of those
combination Scanner/Printer/Photocopier things they have now?

Modern photocopiers are scanners and printers too.

In fact a modern photocopier is defined as an integrated scanner and
laser printer.

Actually the computers with scanners at Robarts are part of the information
commons which is open 24 hours 6 (I think) days a week.
Not that I'm saying we don't need one in CDF, but during non-peak periods
it's pretty easy to get a computer with a scanner at Robarts.
