Discussion:
anyone else experiencing slower internet at the cdf labs?

It seems like the internet in the linux cdf labs was running a lot slower
than usually. Firefox would say it was looking for the requested website,
and after a fairly long time, it would finally connect to it. Was there a
problem with the server, or is there some sort of tweak that can fix this?

Thanks

I think there is something wrong with the DNS server, at the same time,
I notice different work stations have different speed to load KDE

I have the same problem with KDE. On some machines it loads up rocket
speed, and other machines it will load at a snails pace. The difference
in loading times is really significant.

Re: KDE, it's a known problem, and one that I believe is still
without solution. But trust that CDF knows and are working to fix it. The
problem only started when they upgraded all the workstations to Debian
Sarge, and began using the distro packages of KDE 3.3 rather than the
home-brewed KDE 3.4 packages.

This message from CNS (Computing and Networking Services) might explain
it. Are/were there problems with particular sites?

Subject: Heads up: Cogent & Level 3 drop peering, cause reachability
issues

As a heads up: Cogent and Level 3 have abruptly stopped peering with
each other as of Wednesday. Because the university has its major
outbound connection with Cogent, this affects us: we can't reach any
network areas connected through Level 3 alone. One example of such a
site is wikipedia.org; their primary website location is in Florida on
Level3.

(It is not clear at this time what exactly is going on, as both sides
are pointing fingers at each other, more or less discreetly. The only
thing that seems clear is that there was a direct peering arrangement
between the two and it has now been dropped.)

Until this gets resolved, users are going to see a fluctuating
collection of unreachable websites, delayed email, and so on.
(Unfortunately there is no simple way to plug in an IP address and see
if it is connected only via Level 3.)
